Researchers at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, have unfolded and tested a more effective technique for reconstruction of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) according to an Aug 15 2002 moderns release from the University of Virginia Health regularity Each year, thousands of the bulk of mankind suffer PCL injuries playing sports or in car accidents or falls.

This of recent origin technique is termed the tibial inlay technique. Using this technique, the surgeon makes an incision in the back of the knee and retracts the calf muscle. The muscle and tendons are haped to the outside and used to shield the vessels and nerves. The surgeon then creates a long tray in the back of the knee allowing the PCL graft to be placed directly in the wooden channel secured with a screw, and passed into position in the knee

In the past, PCL reconstruction was not surpassingly successful because surgeons avoided using the greatest in number direct route to the PCL--through the back of the knee Using the conventional approach--through the impudence of the knee--poses problems, of that kind as increased risk of graft failure and decreased knee stability above time.
