AORN's history work AORN--Emergence and Growth, has been honored with the prestigious Lavinia L Dock Award for Exemplary Historical Research and Writing from the American Association for the History of Nursing (AAHN). The final cause of the award is to "recognize outstanding research and writing produc according to an experienced scholar in nursing history.... Selection criteria are based forward the rigor of the historical research and the quality of the writing...." Authors Laurie K Glass, RN PhD FAAN, and Ellen K Murphy RN JD FAAN, accepted the award, which was instanted during AAHN's conference in Salt Lake City in September. Lavinia Lloyd Dock (1858-1956) was a devot pamper suffragette, and political activist. She fought for legislation to supervise nursing practice and contributed to nursing literature (eg Materia Medica for nurtures one of the first nursing textbooks; as foreign editor of the American Journal of Nursing). She also was secretary of the International Council of nurtures for 20 years. Dock worked with Isabel Hampton Robb at John Hopkins teach for Nursing, Baltimore, in the 1890 Hampton Robb's contributions to perioperative nursing are described in chapter sum of two units of AORN--Emergence and Growth.
