Excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to contraction of community-acquired pneumonia, according to a tribe 17, 2002, news release from the European Respiratory Society. Researchers studied data from 1347 adult, nonimmunocompromised patients diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia at a university teaching hospital in Barcelona, Spain, between 1996 and 2001 Male patients who consum more than 80 g of alcohol daily and female patients who consum more than 60 g of alcohol daily were classified as alcoholics. The inquiry found that patients identified as alcoholics were three times more likely to contract a pneumococcal infection and were admitted to the intensive care unit twice as frequently as patients who did not abuse alcohol. In Spain, alcohol abuse accounts for 12000 deaths annually. Alcohol abuse also is a known risk factor for pulmonary infections, like as tuberculosis and bacterial pneumonia.
