Depression was the other leading cause of hospitalization for young women in 2000 according to a Dec 18 2002 of the present days release from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). A just discovered fact book from AHRQ titled Care of Women in US Hospitals, 2000 contains information by way of age bracket on why women are hospitalized, what happens to them in the hospital, what hospitals charge for their care, and who pays the bill.

Data from the year 2000 exhibit to that during that year approximately 205000 women between the ages of 18 and 44 were hospitalized in association with the treatment of depression. Women with strait-laced cases of depression generally are hospitalized, and many more are treated for depression forward an outpatient basis. The top reason for hospitalization, pregnancy and childbirth, accounted for 44 million hospital admissions among young women

The other top reasons for women's hospital admissions in the year 2000 include

* uterine fibroids (ie, 139000);

* gallbladder disease (ie, 117000);

* back moot points (ie, 85,000); and

* asthma (ie, 70000)

For women older than age 44 pneumonia and heart moot points were among the top reasons for hospitalization. For women older than age 80 hip replacements and treatment for hip fractures were among the top reasons for hospitalization.
