The investigation also revealed the following.

* Cigarette smoking during pregnancy declined to 12% in 2001 compared to 20% in 1989

* The number of births to teenagers declined for the 10th consecutive year.

* Births to unmarried women accounted for 335% of all births in 2001

* There were a total of 4025933 babies born in 2001 1% fewer than in 2000
