Since the nineteenth hundred years health care workers have worn glove during surgical acts to protect their hands and to defend patients from the potential risk of infection. (1) The fear of contracting occupational hepatitis and the emerging see the verb of the AIDS epidemic during the 1980 however, added a just discovered dimension to the necessity of using surgical glove Today, health care workers use surgical glove to foster themselves and their patients from potentially fatal bloodborne infections. (2) A variety of surgical latex glove ranging from levigateed to powder-free, thin to thick, general-use to task-specific, and textur to plane are available. (3) Health care workers continue to use latex glove because of their tear resistance, flexibility, comfort, fit, and elasticity. As the use of latex glove has increased, however, there has been a consequential increase in the rate of latex sensitivity among perioperative personnel (4) undivided researcher found that the prevalence of latex sensitization was 121% among hospital personnel in general; the same article says latex sensitization was 7% to 10% among perioperative staff members. (5) rejoinders to the increased prevalence of latex allergy have included strategies of that kind as changing the work environment, changing gloving practices, and using nonlatex surgical glove (6)

not many published studies address the barrier qualities of nonlatex surgical glove and plane fewer address how nonlatex surgical glove perform during routine use. in every one's mouth glove standards set by ASTM (formerly American Society for Testing Materials) permit a failure rate of 15% for hazards of sterile surgical latex glove and a failure rate of 25% for nonsterile latex medical glove (7) The US nutrition and Drug Administration (FDA) has commited that nonlatex surgical gloves adapted the same failure rates as latex surgical woodlands (8) In one randomized meditation investigating the differences in barrier quality of surgical glove researchers plant that failure rates of latex and nonlatex surgical glove were not significantly different. (9) simply one nonlatex glove material was examined by the agency of this group, however, and they did not ordeal the effect of glove manufacturer or glove gunpowder on failure rates. A more extensive laboratory analysis performed in succession medical examination gloves found that when adjusted for the confounding validitys of glove durability and quality of manufacture, a certain nonlatex gloves were inferior in barrier effectiveness to latex glove (10)

The adverse forces of glove powder on patients has been noted in a number of studies. Glove powder-induced adhesions, (11) delayed anguish healing, (12) and misdiagnosis of cancer (13) are a small in number reported examples of glove triturate complications. One group of researchers build however, that powder had no issue on glove durability. (14)

Overall, there is a shortage of data about in what way nonlatex surgical gloves perform during routine use and whether the propos recommendations by the agency of ASTM or the FDA are adequate. To determine the barrier effectiveness of nonlatex surgical glove beneath stress, researchers in the now passing study devised a laboratory-based stres protocol intended to mimic many of the stresse that surgical glove bear during use. They compared the barrier effectiveness of latex and nonlatex surgical glove during simulated use and examined differences in performance associated with glove material, stres manufacturer, and the demeanor or absence of glove comminute The study was designed to examine the hypothesis that there is no difference in destitution rates between latex and nonlatex surgical glove after adjusting for glove manufacturer, stres of the same height and the use of powder

METHOD

A laboratory-based experimental design was used to compare durability of latex and nonlatex surgical glove as measured by way of defect rates. A convenience sample of 4006 surgical glove (ie, 962 latex; 2046 neoprene; 500 nitrile; 498 isoprene) representing eight brands was divided into brace groups (ie, stressed and unstressed) This sample size was large enough to provide 80% power, assuming a destitution rate of 1% among unstress glove compared to a conservative 2% failing rate among stressed gloves when the ratio of severityed to unstressed gloves in the sample was 1:1 Glove were examined for barrier effectiveness from five research assistants who were graduate nursing scholars The research assistants wore no jewelry, divide or sever their fingernails short, wore glove of appropriate size, and rotated using the eight brands to minimize bias. All research assistants who participated in the studious mood were trained in the glove testing protocol, which has been replicated and validated in several previously published studies. (15) Each glove was examined one time by one research assistant. Research assistants could not be blinded to the brand of glove because glove were lay opened from sterile packages. The inquiry was laboratory based and relieve from full institutional review board review because it did not involve human participants.
