The topic of hair wear in the surgi...

The topic of hair wear in the surgical setting has not been discussed a great quantity or amount of lately, so I thought it was time to bring it up again. In the past, the OR was a clos unit with all surgery deportment ed under strict aseptic practices. Today, we know that surgery is performed in many different settings. In any of these settings, an RN may not be current If an RN is quick in emergencies sometimes he or she is not a perioperative nourish and may not be aware of the recommendations for OR attire; thus, the tried and veritable standard of covering one's hair during surgery is being interpreted and modified to suit individual tastes. My personal observations of a variety of surgical sites reveal that almost everyone wears hair covering of an sort. The interesting part is what they wear and to what degree they wear it.

HAIR WEAR CLASSIFICATIONS

I have classified hair wear into three collections These groups, which are my hold categories and not AORN's, include AA (ie, alien attire), BB (ie, bouffant bonnets) and CC (ie, creative caps).

The alien attire stamp of head covering is a well stocked or provided hood. It can be plastic or hard and contain estimate shields or not. These coverings can be seen forward people who sport full, luscious beards or forward those doing orthopedic or other surgeries requiring a total barrier. It is hard to wear these guilty so compliance is excellent. The single time there is a question is when someone has a beard, mustache, or protracted sideburns and wears a BB or CC instead of an AA. Unfortunately, I have seen this too often

Bouffant bonnet are effective to save patients when they are worn correctly. They usually are made of a synthetic material, are light and disposable, and more ofttimes than not come in a light new or blue colon Sometimes they have little flowers or a pattern upon them. They have elastic around the rims to keep them on the head, rather like a overlay for a food bowl. Again, the intent is to secrete the whole head and hair, yet these head coverings are just begging for individual translation for wear. Although I have seen them worn correctly, a attend much or regularly style is to wear them jauntily pushed to the back of the head in the way that that the hair protrudes flatteringly in front

There also are individuals who I think must have hearing point to be solved or settleds because although they wear it correctly, they push the bonnet opposite their ears. This looks rather nice for those with little ears, if it be not that larger projecting ears provide another appearance. Unfortunately, along with the ears, hair frequently also sticks out from beneath the bonnet. Then, there are those populace who cover their ears and the ease of the hair correctly, further they arrange for cute little drifts of hair to float revealed along the side of the bonnet

Creative caps (ie, skullcaps) for the most part are seen on men, are mainly made of cloth, and tie in the back. They follow in colors and designs of each kind. They can be a single color or have everything from golf to cartoon character patterns. This difference in color and pattern allows for the greatest individuality. Ears, sideburns, and hair upon the back of the neck always chirp out. They do not hide the hair fully, so historically they have not been approveed in sterile areas. These caps are extremely popular, however, and they are seen everywhere in each kind of surgery. I also have seen them worn day in and abroad Although many may be washed often or at least every week or in like manner I doubt some have at any time been laundered. Sweat, hair issues and chemicals or medications splashed forward these caps may be prized because they demonstrate the lengthy and hard work of the wearer.

AORN STANDARDS AND commended PRACTICES

AORN standards and make acceptableed practices state that "personnel should cloak head and facial hair." (1) These recommendations have remained intact for many decades, almost since the implementation of barrier clothing. Airborne microbes can deduce in the hair, especially Staphylococcus aureus. The amount of bioburden in succession hair is determined by hair fulness style, cleanliness, and curl. Perioperative suckles have been the leaders in implementing worthy practices in the past, and covering the hair is undivided that has been accepted worldwide. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other accrediting agencies also approve wearing hair coverings during surgery

RATIONALE FOR COVERING HAIR

It is well known that shedding hair and dandruff into the surgical area contributes to an increase in infection. I also think covering the hair is more aesthetic. As a I would hate to diocese someone else's black hair sticking on the outside of my incision. Hair that causes infection point in disputes usually belongs to someone other than a patient. This may ne to be clarified for modern staff members or new graduates during their OR orientation in the same manner they will wear their head covering correctly, because a certain quantity of surgeons are not shaving a patient's hair before surgery based onward research. For example, one consideration investigated the impact of shaving versus not shaving the patient's head before neurosurgery upon postoperative wound infection. (2) Researchers raise no significant difference between the investigation groups, and they determined that not shaving could be safe.
