As a recently made known director of an ambulatory surgery center I would like to recognize united of my OR nurses who made a big difference in the perioperative experience of our pediatric patients. We use two-way radios with an ear piece to talk with our regaining room and transport teams. Beth Black, RN had a pediatric patient who was about to experience separation anxiety, in part to be paid to her pending surgery. Beth showed the child the two-way radio during the interview phase and made a game of having fine child and her parents play with the radios. This helped the child and the parents be stirred connected. Beth took the little patient to the OR and had a radio in the same manner the toddler could speak with her parents until induction. The parents felt joined until she was sleeping, and the child felt no separation anxiety. It was a great way to interface with the exigencys of the child and the parents. Beth did a great piece of work of keeping everyone at ease until they were reunited in the postanesthesia care unit. We are collecting real-life stories about members making a difference. For more information or to submit a story, move to AORN's Web site at http://www.aorn.org/practice/ difference.htm or mail to Headquarters, attn: Public Relations.
