Surgery for pediatric patients is a frightening experience for children and their family members. Unfamiliar hospital staff members, unfamiliar and sometimes injurious objects, and separation from parents all contribute to intense anxiety in children. Fear of potential harm to their children, feelings of helplessness in calming their children's fears, and lack of parental command are concerns parents experience when their children suffer surgery.

The step of anxiety felt by parents and the satisfaction they experience with their children's care have not been measured simultaneously. Children's anxiety has been the focus of previous anesthesia induction studies,(1) if it be not that there are no documented studies of parents, anxiety during this period.

purport OF THE STUDY

We undertook this inquiry to determine the effect of parental air on parental anxiety and satisfaction with care during their children's anesthesia induction and postanesthesia care unit (PACU) restoration period. A secondary purpose was to determine physicians' and nursing staff members' support for making parental demeanor standard practice at the facility.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Studies of parental vicinity in the OR and in the PACU have been limited to children's perspectives. Researchers have documented that parental air facilitates smoother anesthesia induction and decreases the use of premedication.(2) single study recommends that parents be involved in their children's anesthesia induction, either according to holding the children or on holding the anesthesia masks forward the children's faces.(3)

Although principally studies have focused on children's anxiety, there is little in the literature about parents' anxiety during their children's perioperative experience. united researcher suggests that patients have more positive issues if their family members are quick in emergencies and supportive and that family members are more supportive when their be in possession of anxieties are lessened through explanations, support from hospital personnel and involvement in the patient's progres during hospitalization. The small number of negative explanations suggested that all groups were highly satisfied. The researchers audited patients' medical records to confirm details of stay, number of pain medications administered, and incidence of children crying and noted a decrease in the number of children crying when their parents were present(7)

Another reflection of visitors in the PACU focused upon adult patients, anxiety, their desire to have visitors, and their on a level of awareness while in the PACU. This thought found that the presence of family members or significant others in the PACU terminateed in decreased patient anxiety. The findings also hint that patients look to family members for support and orientation to their unfamiliar environment.(8)

METHODOLOGY

We designed our meditation to examine broader aspects of parental air during children's surgical experiences. We measured parents, line pressures and pulse rates at three intervals (ie, when parents gave their approval to participate in the contemplation [time one], when they were separated from their children [time two] before their children's transfer to the pediatric unit or discharge from the hospital [time three]) We asked parents to out and out the state portion of the STAI after separation from their children, and we measured parental satisfaction with their children's perioperative care.
