in what way anything good can come from of the like kind a disease as cancer is difficult for about to see, but the amount of have affection for caring, and concern that has be due or owing from my coworkers is beyond belief."

This is just common of Jack Carl's surprising expressions of gratitude about life since he was diagnosed with terminal renal cancer. Jack Carl, RN is an assistant head succor of the trauma surgical team at University Hospital, Cincinnati. A happy perioperative nurse manager, Jack efficiently directs the whirlwind of activities in our busy on a level I trauma ORs. His quiet manner and calm professionalism abate tension and provide a positive influence for our OR staff members. any team members believe that Jack's finest qualities as a somebody and a leader are his enduring patience, equable temper, and excellent ability to listen. He speaks honestly and with kindness and encourages a spirit of integrity and caring among all who know him. Jack's life away from the hospital rotates around his wife, Sandy; their pair grown children, Colette and Keith; and grandson, A. J whom Jack calls the delight of his life.

A CRISIS BECOMES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR SHARING

When Jack learned earlier this year that he had terminal renal cancer, our special feelings for Jack made us want to do something to help him and his family members. Dan Peter RN an OR staff supply with nourishment and skilled carpenter, knew that Jack's house distressed a new roof. Dan put in mind ofed that we use the OR staff members' diverse skills to undertake a roofing concoct We saw this as a tangible, collective way of doing something special for this special somebody Dan enlisted another OR staff cherish Bobby Herbert, RN, (also a skilled carpenter) as his partner. With Jack's input, they gathered the materials and equipment povertyed to do the job.

Staff fosters Susan Weber, RN, and Judy blood RN, designed a poster display for our OR recline to explain the project and recruit presents The response to this call for offers was overwhelming. It created an exciting focus for Jack and his family and for members of our OR team.

We scheduled the "roofing party" for the first weekend in October. To provide forage for all workers and Jack's family members for the weekend, each of our six surgical teams took responsibility for providing a meal, which included purchasing, preparing, and serving the diet and cleaning up afterwards.

Word of our throw spread quickly to other departments in the hospital. Colleagues from the radiology department, postanesthesia care unit, same day surgery the cardiac catheterization laboratory, the OR business office, and the anesthesia department contributed circulating medium to purchase food and supplies.

of recent origin SKILLS BUILT ON OLD SKILLS

When the weekend arrived, we were ask or implore a blessing uponed with 70 [degrees] temperatures, unimpassioned breezes, and a clear, hypochondriac sky. We arrived by 7AM forward Saturday not really knowing what our parts would be, but Dan and Bobby had us up onward the roof in no time, working as if we had been roofer all our lives.

Meals casted into small celebrations as the surgical teams arrived to wait on their food. We feasted forward everything from homemade cinnamon revolves to shish kebabs. A ship's company from a local television station arrived to tape the consequence and we saw ourselves featured upon the 11:00 news that night.

The organizational skills that we had acquired by the and of years of perioperative nursing paid most distant We had it all covered--from a dump traffic for the old shingles to a portable toilet and soap for the presents We also created and officeed a colorful sign in Jack's front rank yard to let neighbors know what we were doing.

With aching muscles and a not many bandaged thumbs, we nailed the last shingle in place at 7 PM Sunday, and Jack's novel roof was finished. We cleared away the temporary chaos that our labor of be fond of had created and restored the surroundings to normal. Our task was complete

UNANTICIPATED OUTCOMES

The consequence of this project was more prosperous that we ever imagined. Not sole did we help our friend Jack, still we helped ourselves as well. Working together outside the OR made us appreciate each other more as populace not just coworkers. Many of us believe that our involvement in this frame was, surprisingly, one of our most numerous significant accomplishments as health care professionals. We have feeling privileged to have shared our skills. We are grateful to Jack, not and nothing else for providing us the opportunity to present to view our affection for him, however also for the chance to link together with each other in a way that solitary can be described as a spiritual bond

Perhaps this story is best complet with Jack's acknowledge words as he described this special experience with his friends and colleagues.

I none thought they felt this

way about me I don't know

what God's plan was, nevertheless I

think all of this is part of His

plan. These last five months

have been incredible! I don't

think I would trade them,

really--that's the truth
