Access to quality health care is an issue for persons living in rural settings. As the OR suckle manager at a 50-bed hospital in rural western Colorado, I was well acquainted with health care access and delivery moot points Our lack of qualified surgical first assistants meant that often we had to perform complicated, emergent courses (eg, exploratory laparotomies, fracture reductions) with the work hard person performing two roles (de mean fellow surgical assistant) simultaneously.

PILOT STUDY

We had three OR staff members (de sum of two units RN first assistants [RNFAs], single certified surgical technologist assistant [CSTA]) who were qualified surgical first assistants, yet our hospital had never permitted them to function in this capacity. I communicated my regards about these safety and quality care issues to the hospital administrator, emphasizing the intrinsic danger of performing surgery without qualified surgical first assistants.
