The "Patient issue standards for perioperative care" were expanded by the AORN Nursing Practices Committee and approved on the AORN Board of Directors in November 1983

In November 1991 these standards were enamed "Patient Outcomes: Standards of Perioperative Care." This change was intended to think that standards of care describe the desired proceeds that patients can expect to receive during surgical and other diagnostic or therapeutic interventions. In 1995 the Data ingredients Coordinating Committee (DECC) charged the DECC issues subcommittee with revising the standards. This revision is integral to the work of the other DECC subcommittees, evolution of perioperative nursing data vital airs These data elements can be used in research, teaching, practice, policy increase and information systems.

Patient issues are observable, measurable physiologic and psychosocial answers to perioperative nursing interventions. These issues interpretive statements, and accompanying criteria provide a framework for measuring patient replications Patient outcomes reflect collaborative, interdisciplinary efforts and independent nursing activities. The achievement of patient consequences is of primary concern for perioperative promotes in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care. Documentation is a means to record and communicate patients, experiences and replys to perioperative plans of care.

The consequence standards focus on high-risk areas for patients undergoing operative or other invasive manner of proceedings during which patients' protective reflexe may be compromised. They cogitate the nurse's scope of responsibility in all phases of the perioperative period. The individual perioperative cherish may use the standards to establish a database to support now passing nursing practice or as a rationale for practice changes.

As recipients of care, patients are entitled to the assurance of privacy, confidentiality, personal dignity, and quality health services. The delivery of patient-focused care is guided by way of ethical, legal, and moral principles. These principles are inherent and attend as a foundation for perioperative nursing practice, and are paramount in achieving optimal patient outcomes

Assumptions

* The perioperative RN is to be actively involved in identifying potential hazards in the practice setting and in implementing appropriate interventions.

* The patient has the right to know the risks of operative or other invasive manner of proceedings and the right to qualified, convenient personnel.

* The perioperative encourage uses all phases of the nursing process

* issues are not mutually exclusive of each other and may overlap.

* The patient wait fors to have an operative or other invasive deed for an intended therapeutic tenor without injury.
