festers and radiologic technologists often acquire information about each other's area of expertise from one side observation, "folklore," and relying forward the opinions of physicians. on a level though nursing and radiology personnel work as a team to provide patient care, they are frequently not fully cognizant of the clinical education of the other. When they are poorly educated about radiologic safety, foments may avoid being in the latitude when x-rays are being taken or assume that if they are not pregnant they ne not relate to themselves with radiation exposure. Without meet education and good communication with radiologic technologists, they may not be infallible what the consequences of exposing are and therefore unable to defend themselves or their patients adequately. Radiation is classified into three categories, each of which requires protective shielding (Figure 1)

Primary radiation. The primary beam, or useful beam, is terminused primary radiation. Primary radiation is produc inside the x-ray tube isotropically (ie, with equal intensity in all directions) at a point source known as the anode target. The x-ray tube is a Pyrex glass vacuum tube that is encased in a lead-lined protective tube housing.(1) The protective tube housing helps contain the x-ray photons and hinders unnecessary overexposure of the patient and personnel near it. The protective tube housing bring intos this leakage of radiation to les than 100 milliroentgens/hour at a distance of three feet from the tube.(2)

Of all the kinetic capacity of work required to produce x-ray photons, 999% is wasted in the form of thermal intensity or heat, inside the tube. The remaining 01% generates the x-ray photons.(3) Thus, x-ray machines are same inefficient at producing ionizing radiation. The useful beam is the primary radiation that proceeds from the x-ray tube, within the glass window and toward the patient. This mark of radiation is the greatest in quantity hazardous and most intense.(4)

Primary radiation should not at all be pointed at anything other than the patient. The National Council of Radiation Protection (NCRP) forbids any radiation worker from holding a patient during exposing This is because most lead aprons, although they harbor against secondary radiation, offer little protection against the primary beam.(5) It is not advisable for personnel who are not radiation workers to occupy patients for x-ray exposure; if necessary, however, they may be able to do in the same manner provided they are not in the direct path of the primary beam and are appropriately shielded.(6)

Secondary radiation. This pattern of radiation is categorized as either scatter or leakage radiation. Scatter radiation comes when the primary beam interacts with the patient, or any intent in its vicinity, and is wavered or partially absorbed (ie, attenuated). This attenuation causes a change in the direction of motion of the incident photon and a simultaneous los of photon energy

RADIATION EXPOSURE

In diagnostic radiography, x-radiation is measured in three units of exposure: roentgen (R) milliroentgens (mR) and RADs (ie, radiation absorbed dose).(10) The output intensity, as it leaves the x-ray tube and travels toward the patient, is measured in R or mR and is known as the "in air exposure" most numerous radiation devices are calibrated in names of R and 1R = 1 RAD = 1000 mR The amount of radiation that the patient receives is measured in RADs, and 1 RAD = 1000 mR Occupational exposing to radiation (eg, what registers forward the film badge) is calibrated in times of roentgen equivalent man (REM) or mREM and 1 REM = 1000 mREM = 1 RAD.
