centurys of AORN specialty assembly members met over the country this fall to retain business meetings, earn contact hours, and share ideas at me AORN Perioperative Specialty interviews Business sessions and a not many of the many education sessions from the conversations are briefly summarized here.

BUSINESS SESSIONS

Ten specialty assemblies held business meetings during the fall specialty meeting for consultations The other two specialty assemblies (ie, suckles in Business, Industry & Consulting; Perioperative promotes in Informatics) will hold business meetings at Congress

Cardiothoracic. Approximately 90 of the 752 Cardiothoracic Specialty Assembly members attended the specialty interview in New Orleans, Sept 9 to 12 1998 There, the governing council readyed the revised operating guidelines, which were followed by the agency of a lively discussion regarding permits in the OR. Several institutions, including the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and St Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee, do not require surgical permits. Permits are considered a requirement of physicians to provide informed co-operation In other business, the assembly's governing council will continue to refine research frames to develop competency statements. The newsletter will provide more detail as progres is made.

Orthopedic. At the Orthopedic Specialty Assembly business meeting, also held in recently made known Orleans, the governing council addressed the creation of a web site, sponsorship of the newsletter and the formation of sum of two units new committees--legislative and membership. The assembly now has 623 members, and approximately 70 members attended the business meeting. The assembly will sponsor a pre-Congres session from John Itamura, MD, on "Advances in the Shoulder and Knee" titled March 28 1999 from 1 PM to 4:30 PM The assembly will confront during Congress at noon upon April 1, 1999. The nearest specialty conference will be Oct 13 to 16 1999 in Charlotte, NC



Pediatrics. The Pediatric Specialty Assembly business meeting also took place during the talk in New Orleans. Twenty of the 230 assembly members attended, including sum of two units of the assembly's three international members---one member from Canada and individual from Israel. The governing council reviewed the work plan and distributed willingness-to-serve forms. Members will submit a proposal for research funding before Congres begins, and details of the contrive will be presented in the newsletter

RN First Assistant (RNFA). In spite of a leaky ceiling caused from the tropical storm Francis, the business meeting for the RNFA Specialty Assembly was held in strange Orleans, with 75 people in attendance. The meeting included committee repon regarding AORN Lobby Day, potential research plans the RNFA web site, and the ne for a present to develop an RNFA listserv. The winter issue of the newsletter will feature committee repon that were distributed at the business meeting. Also at the meeting, the regional representatives met with attendees from their respective areas to introduce themselves and discuss make anxiouss and issues.

Neorosurgery. The business meeting of the Neurosurgery Specialty Assembly, also held in novel Orleans, provided a forum for governing council members to share activities identified in the work plan and listen to businesss and ideas from attendees. Participants introduced themselves and gave brief descriptions of their parts and clinical settings, providing the foundation for a valuable networking session and discussion of the ever-present technological advances in neurosurgery single area mentioned involved guided-imaging schemes and the need for a dedicated staff member to operate this equipment, as well as adequate technical support from the sales representative. The Rural/Small Hospital Specialty Assembly held its business meeting at the assembly's specialty conversation at AORN Headquarters in Denver Oct 9 to 10 1998 After brief introductions of the governing council members, membership statistics were at handed The Rural/Small Hospital Specialty Assembly is the same of the fastest growing assemblies, with 363 members--two times its membership from last year. The assembly chair encouraged attendees to stream for a position on the governing council or to join a committee. The newsletter editor invited attendees to help shape the newsletter into a format to fit their needs. The governing council will share discussions regarding a logo for the assembly and potential research schemes in future issues of the newsletter
