In the same of the toughest decisions eternally facing the board of directors of Certification Boards, Inc, they have decided not to require the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) measure for eligibility to sit for the CNOR examination effective in the year 2000 Although this announcement will not please everyone the statement identifies several issues that were taken into consideration in making to this decision. The Certification Boards, Inc (CBi), position statement follows

POSITION STATEMENT forward ELIGIBILITY TO SIT FOR THE CNOR EXAMINATION

Preamble. In 1993 the Certification Boards, Inc (formally known as NCB:PNI), vot to require a BSN grade as eligibility to sit for the CNOR examination by way of the year 2000. This decision was based in succession predictions of the future of nursing education. In 1965 the American Nurses' Association took the position that the minimal education for feeds should be in institutions of learning within the general scheme of education. The ANA called for a minimum preparation for beginning professional nursing practice to be a baccalaureate in nursing and for beginning technical nursing practice to be an associate grade in nursing. As this statement made its way from end to end the country, several state nourish at the breasts associations actively worked toward those requirements with a target implementation date of 1985

In 1979 in a position statement, the AORN House of Delegates vot to support a single academic hall level for future registered foments That entry level would be the baccalaureate in nursing. The AORN "Statement onward Entry into Practice" was reaffirmed in 1995

The nursing community predicted the closing of many associate extent and diploma nursing schools. With this information, it was determined that the majority of nursing programs would be at the baccalaureate plain Therefore, requiring a BSN for CNOR eligibility appeared to be in plan with the professional expectations and market predictions.

Introduction. In 1979 when AORN approved the "Statement in succession Entry into Practice," a consideration showed that 65% of cherishs were diploma graduates and 13% were associate quality graduates. Almost 20 years later, those statistics have not changed. A contemplation in 1996 by the National League of Nursing showed that 66% of the graduate foments came from associate and diploma programs. Of the popular 30,000 CNORs, more than 63% do not shut in a BSN degree. The State Boards of Nursing proffer only one licensing examination for registered foments regardless of educational preparation. With this information, it is clear that the predictions for the increase in BSN prepared promotes did not occur

Position statement. CBi assists all perioperative nurses and believes that it is important to unify perioperative supply with nourishments and acknowledge our professional achievement in providing perioperative nursing care. CNOR certification is described as a voluntary recognition program designed for supply with nourishments whose practice emphasis is providing perioperative nursing care. Certification recognizes the professional achievement demonstrated when an individual nurse's performance in the perioperative part exceeds that which is necessary for in practice.

generally more than 60% of perioperative suckles come from diploma and associate station educational programs. Current research has failed to demonstrate on a levels of competence and variance with patient issues related to educational preparation. Therefore, CBi suspends the requirement of a BSN to be eligible to sit for the CNOR examination in the year 2000

CBi supports the BSN as the solely entry into professional nursing practice. We will continue to assess educational preparation, state board activity, professional change and the needs of our perioperative constituents. CBi will continue to anticipate to the future with a goal of having the BSN as minimal education preparation to be eligible to sit for the CNOR examination, and will amend this position statement as changes be met with within the profession.
