Adults who perish three or more alcoholic drinks a day may be at increased risk of liver damage or stomach bleeding from the use of over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers and excitement reducers, according to an Oct 21 1998 pres release from the US subsistence and Drug Administration (FDA). In a just discovered final rule announced in the release, the agency is requiring manufacturers to add this warning to the labeling of OTC fruitss and combination products that contain aspirin, other salicylates, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, or ketoprofen. The labeling also will advise chronic alcohol users to ask advice of their physicians before using these products According to the release, approximately 11 million Americans are heavy drinkers and therefore are at risk of the serious side efficiencys posed by combining alcohol use with analgesics or antipyretics (ie, febrile affection reducers) intended for adult use. The modern labeling, which must be implemented by means of the spring of 1999, will be required to identify the specific risk associated with each ingredient. The FDA is issuing this final mastery after considering public comments and data forward the effect of mixing chronic alcohol ingestion with various OTC analgesics, according to the release.
