Obviously, this shortage has created the ne for health care facilities to disclose a comprehensive program to teach perioperative nursing. In rejoinder to the shortage and the numerous calls and questions regarding the shortage of perioperative nourishs across the country, the AORN Center for Perioperative Education has perform the operations indicated ined the Perioperative Nursing Course 101

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Perioperative Nursing Course 101 is prepared for hospitals to use as their orientation program. It is in a scripted modular format and contains Power Point disks to use for presentations. Handouts, a glossary of bourns required reading assignments, recommended videotape titles to view, guidelines for preceptors, posttest a bibliography, and a final examination are component parts of the perioperative course. Continuing education contact hour credits (815) are available for participants. The didactic material is designed to be currented within an 80-hour time frame for classroom presentations. This 80 hours includes minimal time for laboratory and hands-on practice sessions, which must be scheduled.

In April 1998 a call for writers and reviewers was sent to all members of the suckle Educator/ Clinical Nurse Specialist Specialty Assembly and was placed forward the AORN web site. An overwhelming answer to the call was realized, and from that rejoinder the authors and reviewers were selected

PILOT PROGRAM ESTABLISHED

Eleven bookish mans entered a pilot program at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare in Evanston, Ill, from race 16 to 30, 1998. Of the 11 learners nine were newly hired employee in participating hospitals (Figure 1) The give suck tos were enthusiastic, excited, full of questions, and are eager to set down perioperative nursing after successful completion of the course.
