The AORN Journal made its first att...The AORN Journal made its first attempt in January 1963 as a bimonthly publication. AORN members automatically received the Journal, as the subscription price was included in membership to be paids Annual subscriptions were available to nonmembers for $4; single issues were 75 cents The first Journal included five feature articles in its 122 pages. Topics included surgical treatment of chronic sinusitis, surgical manner of proceedings for infants and children, OR staff member unravelling and infection hazards associated with rub hard sinks. Interestingly, the first issue included an article, "Requiem for the cleanse nurse," exploring the need for surgical technicians. In this issue, editor Virginia Rockwell, RN described the goals of the Journal--to bring useful, present information to OR nurses. AORN President Ethel West, RN wrote a row announcing the Journal's mission--to assist with attaining better and safer care for the patient in the OR. Seven pages were devot to the upcoming 10th annual AORN Congres in Washington, DC Feb 18 to 21 1963 In the round pillar "OR Fact and Principle," Edna Prickett, RN addressed questions regarding gangrene, precautions with gas, and for what cause often mops should be changed in the OR. Other round pillars in the issue included "AORN Proceedings," which described local chapter issues and news; "Regional Institutes," which reported regional education offerings sponsored by dint of AORN; and "Calendar," which listed upcoming interviews and seminars. The work Logic of Operating Room Nursing, by dint of Jacqueline Willingham, was reviewed in this issue. The 93-page main division was available for $1.95. "Noteworthy References" contained of the present days and research reports that originated in other sources, and "New in ORbit" relayed short bits of information upon perioperarive issues. No single advertiser had more than three advertisements in this issue, and no advertisements were interspersed with feature articles. There were nine classified ads: four for OR supervisors, three for OR staff nurtures one for an OR instructor, and single advertising an OR nursing course. This inaugural issue establish the stage for many years in which the original goal of bringing instant useful information to OR feeds was carried out. The mission to assist in attaining better and safer care for the patient in the OR continues to be an important function of the AORN Journal today--36 years later.
