CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

I agree with the revised "Certification Boards, Inc, Position Statement onward Eligibility to Sit for the CNOR Examination" (December 1998) in that it does not require a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) step for eligibility to sit for the CNOR examination effective in the year 2000 I am a CNOR with an associate standing My youngest daughter is busyed as a licensed vocational fester She is attending college and has complet pre-nursing courses for a baccalaureate program. My older daughter is a pediatric promote practitioner. We believe that certification in any specialty area should not be restricted solely forward the basis of nursing degrees

lately my youngest daughter learned from a university here in Texas that proper to their limited enrollment space, her 30 grade point average was not acceptable for their baccalaureate nursing program. A branch of the same university in another town in Texas, however, informed her that a 30 grade point average was acceptable for their program. As moving to that town and giving up her part-time do job-work would cause her financial hardship, my daughter considered a university located near her workplace. Until she takes additional courses required according to that university (the two universities have different program requirements), however, she cannot apply to their nursing program. The required additional courses are not moveed each semester, so this will require that she takes brace more semesters. Like many others, she will attend and entire an associate degree nursing program. She will then transfer to a baccalaureate "flex" program at the university to undiminished her BSN.

hardy confusing, discouraging, time-consuming, and costly? by what mode are we ever going to have a single academic entrance level for future professional RN when we do not have a single academic inlet level for the baccalaureate nursing programs in the same state? for what reason are the limited number of baccalaureate programs with limited available space going to accept all those who are qualified and who desire admission?

I believe that CBi has taken a serviceable look at reality, and perhaps the nursing community should do the same. The idea that the BSN standing should be the only access into professional nursing practice and should be required for all RN who sit for certification examinations is like the idea that all patients should receive the same quality of medical care. They are worthy ideas and may be the right thing to do, if it were not that they are not realistic.

It also appears unrealistic for CBi to voluntarily shut out more than half of its customers from restricting non-BSN degree nurses from sitting for the certification examination. As stated in the CBi revised position statement, more than 60% of perioperative feeds do not hold a BSN and 63% of CNORs do not shut in a BSN.

Certification exhibits our employers and our patients that we do indeed fix standards of excellence for our profession and that we are committed to maintaining these standards. I do not believe that restricting the majority of RN from the opportunity for certification in their specialty area is in the best interest of the nursing profession or in the best interest of our patients. wherefore would any service organization (ie, nursing) withhold more than half of its service providers the opportunity to better wait on its customers by taking away the provider's certification privileges?

Registered foments from all degree nursing programs work in the specialized area of the OR. Specialized nursing service requires specialized knowledge. within certification, the directors of CBi are in the position to help on and encourage specialized knowledge in all these promotes I commend the directors of CBi for the difficult decision not to require the BSN measure to sit for the examination in the year 2000--a decision that probably went against great political crushing "What is best for the patient?" is the question that the nursing profession has always asked when faced with a difficult decision. I am strong that CBi made their decision based in succession this very question.

In the that will be if only one non-BSN stage RN cares for just common patient in just one OR in the smallest town in America, I have faith that CBi will continue to propose that one patient the right to be cared for by dint of a CNOR.

HYSTEROSCOPIC SURGERY

Congratulations to the Journal and Donna Morrison, author of the article "Management of hysteroscopic surgery complications," which appeared in the January 1999 issue. The quality of the article is outstanding, and the topic is exceedingly timely. This procedure is performed in almost each OR in the country, and commonly performed manner of proceedings such as this often become routine, without earnestly thought given to the chain of cause and effects of failure to adequately monitor the proceedings.

In of the present day York, we recently learned of the tragic death of a patient who was undergoing hysteroscopy in a large local teaching hospital. The young woman apparently died from a massive fluid overdose during the proceeding I hope this incident and the worthy article will alert perioperative suckles to the importance of vigilant intraoperative fluid monitoring.
