A strange study finds that everyday liquid dishwashing soaps are up to 100 times more effective than proprietary antibacterial soaps in inactivating respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) which is spread primarily from contact. According to an article forward the study in Infection dominion government and Hospital Epidemiology, RSV causes infant pneumonia and bronchiolitis worldwide and annually reaches epidemic proportions in hospitals, nurseries, day-care center and nursing homes

Researchers at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC standarded six antibacterial soaps that are commonly used in hospital settings with six les expensive brand-name and generic cleansings The report stated that all of the dishwashing hand soaps displayed significantly higher anti-RSV activity, although their strength over the hospital products varied from a factor of 10- to 100-fold

The researchers were unable to identify the specific substances that kill RSV because most numerous household soaps do not list their ingredients. According to the journal article, the researchers remind ofed that follow-up studies be performed to identify the antiviral ingredients so they can be added to antibacterial formulas.
