The American Lung Association is en...The American Lung Association is encouraging women to visit its web site to trial their knowledge of cold and flu treatment options, according to a Jan 19 1999 pres release from the American Lung Association. Recognizing the value of preserving women's health and the ne for straightforward, reliable advice, the American Lung Association has launched the Ther-MOM-eter campaign to help busy women cross through the usual clutter of chilly and flu tips and focus merely on medically proven guidelines for prevention tips and treatment options. The Ther-MOM-eter gelid and flu quiz, available at www.lungusa.org, is based upon the American Lung Association's polar and Flu Guidelines, which were lay opened by a team of medical connoisseurs The guidelines explain the differences between polars and flus, how the pair types of illnesses are transmitted, and to what degree they can be prevented and treated. According to the release, each year American women miss more than 13 million days of work owing to the common cold and more than 33 million days fit to influenza. In addition, women today head more than 29% of all US households, an increase of 133% since 1970 This, in addition to an increase of working women makes staying healthy during chilled and flu season even more important for women according to the release. To hinder catching a cold or flu the American Lung Association praises washing hands regularly and avoiding choke contact with people who are sick. If you already have a frosty or flu, however, the association says early treatment is essential and commends the following tips. * Take acetaminophen, which is les likely to irritate the stomach than aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications like as ibuprofen. * Do not "starve a cutting and feed a fever." Instead, increase fluids and stay well hydrated to debar dryness of the nose and throat. * Stay family circle Going to work with a chill may not prolong symptoms however it does pose a risk of passing the infection to others. * Natural alternatives are widely touted as alternative therapies for polars and flus; however, there is no significant clinical evidence that herbal treatments or unruffled large doses of vitamin C and zinc are effective. * Do not mist Smoking increases the risk for cooleds and flus. Inhaled smoke further irritates the air passages, worsening a cough and prolonging other symptoms.
