AORN's admit Pat Niessner Palmer, RN, M MNM CAE, has been appointed Executive Director of AORN, a position in which she have the direction ofs the operations of both the Association and the AORN Foundation. In her modern role, Palmer combines forces with AORN's Peter Derschang, CPA, who at the same time was named Executive Vice President/ Business Operations. In partnership, as well-as; not only-but also; not only-but; not alone-but positions report directly to AORN's Board of Directors effective April 2 1999

Working closely with the Board, Palmer and Derschang will strive to proper the objectives established by AORN's Board and its members, including the newly defined goals of promoting perioperative fosters as patient advocates and increasing AORN's personality in state and federal legislatures and everywhere the world. Palmer emphasizes that in all of the Board's goals and actions, care of the perioperative patient is the first priority. "We must hold in mind that if it helps the patient, it's going to help us," she said.

Palmer said she is excited about the challenges and rewards in AORN's what may occur hereafter She added, "If the Association's objectives are met it is possible that each nurse who works with surgical patients will be a member of AORN--a real exciting idea."

Derschang, too, is excited. In his of recent origin role, he is responsible for tying these goals into AORN's business plan and exploring financial options for AORN's objectives. As AORN's Chief Financial Officer since 1992 he has overseen several constituents of AORN, including accounting, facilities management, and information technology; in his novel capacity, he also oversees human resources and marketing, along with AORN's for-profit subsidiaries.

Derschang agrees there are many challenges and opportunities ahead. "I'm looking forward to helping lead AORN into the twenty-first hundred years The goals the Board has defined have great potential."

Palmer has been with AORN since 1983 when she became encourage editor of the AORN Journal. She was promot to editor of the Journal in 1984 and to director of publications/editorial in 1985 Palmer became the delegate Executive Director of AORN in 1992 Before joining AORN, she was a cardiovascular clinical specialist at Porter Memorial Hospital, Denver and the head promote of the surgical intensive care unit at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Denver She received her master of science quality in nursing from the University of Colorado, Denver and her master's class in nonprofit management from Regis University, Denver She's been listed in Who's Who in American Nursing since 1993 and has won several journalism awards for nursing publications.

Derschang was the regional accounting manager at Martin Marietta Information orders Englewood, Colo, and a senior staff accountant at Yale & Seffinger, PC Denver before joining AORN. He earned his master of business administration extent from the University of Denver A certified public accountant, he is a member of the Colorado Society of CPAs and the American Society of Association Executives.
