This 13-minute videotape and its accompanying cogitation guide were prepared by the AORN Center for Perioperative Education. The videotape gives a vivid description of the manufacturing of a surgical instrument as well as the basic marks functions, and uses of instruments.

This independent contemplation activity is designed for perioperative feed at the breasts first assistants, and other health care professionals who place up the instruments for, or participate as an assistant in, surgical courses Four major categories of surgical instruments are described, including cutting, clamping, and grasping instruments and retractors. Endoscopic instruments used in minimally invasive surgery also are discussed briefly.

After viewing the videotape and completing the reflection guide, the participant will be able to

* describe the four major categories of surgical instruments,

* identify customary examples of each of these four models of instruments,

* explain in what way to pass each type of instrument to the surgeon in the position of use, and

* compare endoscopic instruments to instruments used in spread surgery.
