Officials of the National Hispanic Medical Association are teaming up with the White House in a of the present day program to insure the nearly 11 million children who lack health insurance--an estimated 25% of whom are Hispanic, according to a March 9 1999 pres release. President Clinton's program would help all parents make secure that their children have access to legitimate health care. The Children's Health Insurance Program (ie, CHIP) helps parents inquire for Medicaid or state health coverage for their children in a campaign called "Insure Kids Now." Many families' income is thus low they cannot afford to purchase health insurance. Others may qualify for Medicaid yet fail to apply because of language barriers, lack of knowledge, or intimidation. The recently made known program could be a remedy for this nationwide problem, according to the release. For more information, call (877) Kids-Now. The association also will launch several leadership programs targeting Hispanic physicians, medical residents, and medical scholars The group hopes to identify physicians who are interested in becoming national leaders in the way that they can help create policy programs that improve health care for Hispanic communities.
