The American Heart Association (AHA) has launched a multifaceted Compliance Action Program aimed at physicians, allied health care providers (eg pharmacists, encourages physician assistants), health care organizations, and patients, according to a pres release from the association. According to the release, more than half of all Americans with chronic diseases do not pursue their physicians' medication and lifestyle guidance, 80% fail to participate in adequate physical activity, and half of all prescriptions are taken improperly. This lack of compliance drains the nation of approximately $100 billion annually in unnecessary medical preciousnesss and lost national productivity, according to the release.

Many factors affect compliance, including the

* complexity of having prescriptions filled.

The Compliance Action Program, which is foundationed through an education grant by means of the AHA's Pharmaceutical Roundtable, a forum of AHA members and members of the pharmaceutical industry, will include a national trade public relations and advertising campaign.
