A. INTRODUCTION

ASSUMPTIONS. This document is intended to oblige as a guide for perioperative feed at the breasts and others currently involved in the care of morbidly obese patients and to assist those working to establish bariatric surgical services in the facilities where they practice. The guideline is designed to assist perioperative practitioners in creating and maintaining an optimal health care environment for bariatric patients. The guideline defines the unique physical and psychosocial emergencys of the patient population that is morbidly obese and not aways guidance for establishing a bariatric surgery program.

The "AORN bariatric surgery guideline" is based in succession current available research and skilled hand opinion. It is assumed that ongoing research will come in new knowledge, procedures, and medical and nursing interventions for the treatment of morbid obesity. This guideline may require modification based onward specific patient and facility needs

Bariatric surgery is the surgical treatment of morbid obesity. It is a recognized subspecialty in the field of general surgery and is a rapidly growing subspecialty in the United States and from beginning to end the world. The goal of bariatric surgery is to achieve sustained weight los and reversal of patients' comorbidities. The fresh increase in both the popularity of and demand for bariatric surgery can be attributed primarily to sum of two units factors: there are no nonsurgical approaches that are effective drawn out term for treating morbid obesity, and the overall succes of weight los surgery has terminateed in greater acceptance of surgery as a treatment option.



DEFINITIONS. For the ends of this document, the following definitions apply.

Anastomosis--The surgical connection of brace hollow structures (eg, stomach to intestine, intestine to intestine, intestine to colon bile tube to intestine). Morbid obesity--Having a BMI greater than 40 with or without comorbidities.

Pouch--A surgically created portion of the stomach that promotes as a reservoir for forage immediately after food exits the esophagus.

Restrictive--Decreasing or limiting the amount of nutriment intake.

Roux limb--The portion of small bowel where diet exits the stomach and inscribes the bowel. The Roux limb starts where sustenance enters and ends where the biliopancreatic limb joins it to form the frequent channel.
