Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), an intense combination medication therapy for patients who have HIV infection, is merely half as successful in reducing HIV in patients treated at typical urban HIV clinics as in similar patients recorded in clinical trials, according to a Nov 18 1999 pres release from the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research.

Missed appointments are the primary reason clinic patients do not fare as well as reflection patients. Medication therapy compliance is more easily controll when patients are chronicleed in a study, according to the release.

Researchers analyzed the succes of a broad range of multiple medication therapies in 273 patients at an urban HIV clinic. Thirty-seven percent of patients receiving HAART had undetectable HIV flushs after one year of therapy, and alone 23% of patients experienced viral suppression in the three time periods studied (ie, united to 90 days, three to seven month seven to 14 months) This was half the rate of viral suppression in patients participating in clinical trails, according to the release.
