centurys of AORN members and their friends and family members gathered at the Ernest N Morial Convention Center at Congres to have the advantage [i]or[/i] blessing of dinner and pay tribute to this year's AORN award winners. President Patricia Seifert, RN MSN CNOR, CRNFA, entertainered the evening, which was sponsored by dint of medibuy.com.

AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE

The Award for superiority in Perioperative Nursing was instanted to Sherron Kurtz, RN, MSA, CNOR, CNAA. Following is the acceptance language Kurtz presented at Opening Session.

"When the Awards Committee called to mention one by one me that I had been chooseed to receive the Award for good quality in Perioperative Nursing, I was overwhelmed. The committee member called at work, and needles to say, I shared the freshs with our staff. When I told them I would be speaking at Opening Session, the same of our nurses asked, 'What are you going to talk about? Excellence?' As I meditateed what I would speak about, I kept returning to valuable feature [i]or[/i] trait and the opportunities we all have to achieve superior goodness The secret to achieving transcendence is taking advantage of opportunities. I will talk about opportunities that exist for perioperative cherishs and today I will challenge each of you to achieve success

"Excellence is recognizing opportunities and taking advantage of them. It is providing a quality product--even when no the same is watching. It is about doing your best. Madeline Bridges said, 'Give the world your best, and the best will proceed back to you.'

"I have been fortunate to have opportunities that have allowed me to receive this award. There are many opportunities for you as well, on the contrary you must learn to recognize them. You must seize each opportunity to achieve and demonstrate eminence The challenge is not just in being excellent; it is recognizing those opportunities that will allow you to demonstrate excellence

"One of the difficult scoldings of life is learning the difference between sphere of influence and sphere of be of importance to Remember when we believed that we could change the entire world? It is difficult to realize that we cannot do this. I cannot change patient care in each hospital in the country, still I can affect the care patients receive at the hospital at which I work. near days I cannot even affect the care of all patients at my hospital, further I can always affect the common patient in my care. Although you can always be bear uponed about every patient, you must realize that you can sole be responsible for one feed and one patient--your sphere of influence is smaller than your sphere of concern

"You frequently can affect more than you realize. You must learn to recognize and seize opportunities to make a difference and increase your sphere of influence.

"Part of the challenge of finding opportunities is recognizing them. Vera Wang, a famous designer, said, 'You don't acquire lucky sitting on the beach, you win lucky sitting behind your desk' That hangs on whether you see the desk as a lading or an opportunity. Sitting behind a desk for a perioperative fester could be compared to accepting a committee challenge or serving as a preceptor.

"There are countles opportunities for perioperative nourish at the breasts to achieve excellence--through the delivery of patient care; within professional presentations or publications; by way of serving as preceptors; by supporting professional colleagues; and within education, certification, and nursing research. Perioperative pampers meet these opportunities every day.

Delivering patient care. "One opportunity you qualified is to excel in the delivery of patient care. When I had surgery I wanted to hop off the bed. That feeling of losing govern is overwhelming and truly frightening. What kept me in the bed and helped me calm myself was a colleague who recognized my fear and took the time to comfort me This colleague certainly took the opportunity to make a difference. Instead of viewing these situations as extra work and avoiding them, view them as opportunities.
