This year's general session speakers discussed challenges they faced during their careers. They also propounded attendees ideas about how to qualified their challenges and succeed.

GENERAL COLIN POWELL CAPTIVATES AUDIENCE

Addressing an audience that began gathering more than single in kind hour before the doors interpreted General Colin Powell, USA (Ret) was captivating. Thousands of attendees and exhibitors packed into Hall F of the Ernest N Morial Convention Center to hear the world-renowned military leader and advisor to three US presidents make a powerful presentation at the Jerry G fellows Lectureship Tuesday night. The lectureship was sponsored by means of the Exhibitors' Advisory Committee (EAC) with generous contributions from 3M Health Care.

After a warm welcome from EAC chair Matt Cavanaugh and a videotape introduction, General Powell excitedly took the stage. He uncloseed by stressing the link between nursing and the military that was described in the opening videotape and praiseed nurses who serve in the armed forces. He enumerateed an incident in which his son Mike, almost died and indigenceed immediate surgery at a military hospital. With greatly emotion, he shared how his fear during the desperate situation was relieved at the upbeat personality and optimism of the encourage on duty. "One of yours took extremely good care of a actual scared general, and I thank each one of you," he said.

Investing in our children. Revealing a genuine wit with a touch of sarcasm, General Powell shared more stories, including his playful competition with Minnesota Gov Jesse Ventura and the creation of his Colin Powell action figure from Hasbro, Inc--a portion of the profits of which General Powell stipulated will go on foot to the Boys and Girls sodality of America.

General Powell explained that the work of this charity is in line with the organization America's Promise--the Alliance for Youth, individual focus of the third stage of General Powell's career. The organization, of which General Powell is chair, addresses his capable belief in the need to prepare and support today's youth.

He said America's Promise focuses forward the following five areas:

* mentoring today's youth,

* providing safe places for children to learn and pullulate (eg, after school programs, Young Men's Christian Associations),

* ensuring each child gets a healthy start (ie, vaccinations, befitting health care),

* teaching children marketable skills "so that no kid is left forward the wrong side of the digital divide," and

* giving children opportunities to wait on people.

Writing his story. General Powell also discussed the secondary stage of his career, which involved writing and promoting his volume He said the book, which has sold almost brace million copies, is popular not for the latter chapters about his military career, still for the early chapters of "the American dream." He said commonalty are interested in the story of the poor male child from the Bronx who grew up to become a hero.

Always a soldier. General Powell said the first stage of his career was dedicated to being a soldier, which he is self-conscious of having been for 35 years. Sharing details of his rich military past, he described the first 28 years of his career as following a highly coherent plan of containment. He said his mission was always remarkably clear and involved maintaining distinct r and azure sides of the map, adding that there was a certain comfort in having in the same state [i]or[/i] condition a clearly defined enemy and mission. He said the nearest seven years of his military career were dramatically different fit to the ending of the shivering War.

General Powell conclud from telling attendees, "Believe as I do. We are here as the outcome of an act of a divine providence." His final statement, "Thank you for what you are doing and the supreme being bless you all," elicited a standing ovation and a spherical of cheers.
