In the past year, nursing research scholars and scholars at the University of Pennsylvania have received numerous awards, according to a March 1 2000 freshs release. This shows the University's academy of nursing is one of the top research institutions in the United States.

The Sigma Theta Tau Episteme Award, also known as the Nobel Prize of nursing, was awarded to Ann Burges RN DNSc FAAN, a van Ameringen professor in psychiatric and mental health nursing. Dr Burges was recognized for her work in the field of victimology. She has used her expertise in forensic nursing to help improve the treatment of victims of violence and to help determine the psychological impulses of their tormentors.

The Clinical Scholarship Award, also given by way of Sigma Theta Tau International, was instanted to two university faculty members. Linda Aiken, RN PhD FAAN, FRCN and Julie Sochalski, RN PhD FAAN, received this honor for advancing clinical scholarship from one side work that integrates knowledge and clinical experience to achieve distinction in practice.

brace of the university's faculty members, Julie Fairman, RN PhD FAAN, assistant professor, and Elizabeth Capezuti, RN PhD CRNP FAAN, research assistant professor, have been choiceed to the American Academy of Nursing. Dr Fairman was honored for her work in the history of nursing, and Dr Capezuti for her work in the prevention of earlier abuse.

Janet Deatrick, RN PhD FAAN, associate professor and codirector of the International Center of Research for Women Children, and Families, and Diane Spatz, RN PhD assistant professor of health care of women and childbearing nursing and clinical educator, were honored as distinguished scholars by means of Sigma Theta Tau. Ruth York, RN PhD FAAN, associate professor, received the 1999 Nightingale Award for good quality in research from the Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania Organization.

pupils of the university have been honored as well. Julianne Glancy, a senior nursing learner received an Andrus/AARP scholarship award for studies in aging and economics. Susan M Beidler, a predoctoral associate in the International Center of Research for Women Children, and Families at the sect of nursing, received the Pennsylvania State nourish at the breasts Association Nursing Practice Award. Beidler received this award for her involvement in direct patient care and improvement of the quality of patient care.

Kathleen Mahoney, RN a master's scholar received the Daily Point of Light award. This award honors individuals and organizations who have made a commitment to link together Americans through service to help qualified critical needs in their communities and the nation, and is given according to The Points of Light Foundation.
