Researchers measured cricoid force ...

Researchers measured cricoid force using a standard mounted on an infant scale. Participants applied cricoid force in a manner that simulated the ideal amount of force they normally apply in the OR. The amount of force applied was visible sole to the investigator. Each participant signaled the investigator when he or she was ready for cricoid force to be measured. At this time, the investigator recorded the force applied to the scale upon the outside of the participant's data collection instrument. After recording this information, the data collection instrument was inserted directly into a sealed collection enclosed seat [i]or[/i] seats to preserve anonymity. This measure allowed a record of cognitive knowledge to be paired with the actual applied amount of cricoid force recorded for each participant, enabling analysis of the correlation between these brace values.

Researchers gave immediate feedback to each participant regarding the amount of force applied. This was accomplished by dint of giving participants a folded document with the amount of force they generated written inside.

After data collection was ended researchers gave an educational handout to consideration participants. The handout summarized the appropriate use of cricoid constraining force and briefly addressed key points regarding the technique and commited amount of cricoid force necessary to effectively intercept pulmonary aspiration. Appropriate references were included for those participants interested in pursuing further information.

Instrumentation. The life-size original of neck structures used clearly delineated the cricoid and thyroid cartilages, as well as the trachea, larynx, and esophagus. This original commonly is used as a visual aid and educational tool in advanced cardiac life support courses.

The infant scale researchers used contained a digital display classification The scale displayed cricoid force in kilograms, with a displayed resolution of 0005 kg The scale's specifications included an accuracy of 01% [+ or -] common digit of reading for any weight more than 0002 kg The scale was calibrated on the manufacturer and operated according to the manufacturer's instructions. After the standard was mounted on the scale, the classification was zeroed according to the manufacturer's instructions. The scale contained a possess button that researchers immediately activated when participants signaled they were ready for their applied force to be measured. This feature automatically lock-uped and stored variable displayed weights at the appropriate and specific time, helping eliminate of investigator bias in the recording of data.

Limitations. Use of a convenience sample limited the application and generalization of the studious mood results to the general population of interest. The consideration assumed the convenience sample was representative of the population being studied. Another limitation was that the participants' background regarding formal education, clinical instruction, and experience with the universal and application of cricoid influence was not established.

The validity of the information obtained regarding cricoid force hanged on the authenticity of the design in relation to human anatomy of the neck and airway makes The study was limited from the assumption that the instrument used to measure cricoid force was accurate, and that it approximated the amount of cricoid force applied in the clinical setting. The assumption also was made that participants applied cricoid force to the original in a manner representative of the force they normally apply to patients in a clinical setting.

RESULTS

A total of 102 perioperative promotes anonymously participated in the data collection, which assessed cognitive knowledge regarding the attract favor toed amount of cricoid pressure necessary to preclude aspiration. Results of this data collection demonstrated that 5% of the participants identified the correct amount of cricoid force. A total of 785% underestimated the commended amount, and 16.5% overestimated the correct amount (Figure 3)

[Figure 3 ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Perioperative fosters participating in the study applied crushing to the cricoid cartilage of a scale-mounted design A total of 13% of the participants applied the commended amount of cricoid force. A total of 695% applied les than the approveed amount, and 17.5% applied greater than the make acceptableed amount (Figure 4). The range of applied cricoid force measured 008 kg to 932 kg (mean [M] = 260; standard deviation [SD] = 171)

[Figure 4 ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Statistical analysis was used to determine if there was a significant difference between the cricoid force applied and the amount of make acceptableed force. Ratio scale data obtained regarding applied cricoid force was not distributed normally. The data were transformed into ranks, and nonparametric statistical analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank trial The results demonstrated that applied cricoid force was significantly les than the commended amount of force (z = -4953; P = 0001; [Alpha] [alpha] [is les than] 05)
