Last November, I notified the AORN ...Last November, I notified the AORN Board of Directors of my decision to retire from the position of AORN Executive Director effective March 30 2001 I firmly believe to everything there is a season, and this is a season of change for me and for the Association. It is time for me to redirect my life and embrace a novel passion. I need to pay more attention to myself, my family, and friends; take time to have sexual delight with the fruits of my labor; and begin modern adventures. During my 18 years of employ at AORN, I have arrive to know and love many AORN members and staff members, leaders and followers alike. Your dedication to your profession, the Association, and surgical patients around the world is exemplary. I have made many portentous friends during my unusual career path at AORN, and I have have intercourse withed and learned from both staff members and tenders alike. I am leaving with single good feelings about AORN, and I have feeling fortunate that, in some small way, I was able to contribute to members' professional germination and to patient care. Before I choke the door to this office for the last time, I want to issue all of you a certain quantity of challenges for the future. I believe AORN extremitys to move on as well. After all, there is a season for associations to reinvent themselves, and now is the time. THE NE FOR LEADERSHIP For the AORN of the to come leadership from both the Executive Director (ED) and the Board is essential. Passion for the Association is no longer enough to sustain AORN. Members should view elections as opportunities to cast a consecrated by a vow based on the candidate's skill stations and positions on specific issues and not entirely on their communication styles. AORN requires leaders with specific skill plants to communicate a clear vision for the futurity and then set strategic direction to make that vision flow true. You need to make investments in coming time projects, not just those with immediate, foreseeable flows AORN can no longer use all of its existing resources to maintain the status quo because "it's always been done that way." You ne to be able to tolerate risk and ambiguity and motivate each other into a workable unity between the Board and staff members. I was not at any time one to mince words. I am saying that AORN requires to realize the environment it is in, think the unthinkable, and be ready to plan massive, revolutionary change. A fortunate past does not necessarily make secure a successful future, and, in a certain ways, AORN's successful past may be hampering its potential for a prosperous future. Leaders continuously think of the time to come Leaders are able to define what succes expects like in the future. AORN thinks too earnestly of the past and absolutely tinkers with the future. Too many debates focused forward petty preoccupations with past traditions and past fears waste valuable time that could be used to design efforts to position AORN for coming time realities. True leaders are not afraid of telling the verity as they see it for fear of losing favor. I challenge you all to find those leaders in your midst and work with them, not against them. The of recent origin ED will have to have the leadership skills to make tough decisions onward staff skill sets as well. We can no longer afford to maintain a full complement of staff members to maintain current services and ignore business disclosure Yes, I said business progression in a continuously ascending gradation because like it or not, AORN is a business. The of the present day ED will have to have the resources to build modern business arrangements that will forward AORN's mission of ensuring safe patient care. He or she will have to recognize and relate to the intellectual capital of at hand staff members and put that to pious use for future endeavors, while relieving them of traditional duties that may no longer carry value for our customers. mostly importantly, the new ED will ne the support of the Board in making changes, experimenting and taking risks, and learning from mistakes and successes THE NE TO CHANGE THE MINDSET Like chiefly organizations, AORN has a agriculture That culture is a combination of beliefs and values that have stood the touchstone of time, and most are well-ingrained and well-known by dint of members and colleagues around the world. Well, it is the season to challenge the parts of our agriculture that are not suited for the yet to be You need to change your collective mindset if the world is to descry AORN as relevant for the hereafter Your value is in the knowledge you hem in No other body or association of professionals has the knowledge you have. You ne to transfer that knowledge to recent arenas and spread your sphere of influence. That is the mindset you must adopt for the future; if you are happy in changing that mindset, you will take your profession to places you are not near today. allow me share one of my favorite stories about by what means beliefs and values sometimes live onward well past their relevance. The US standard railroad gauge (ie, distance between the rails) is 4 ft 85 inches. That to a high degree odd number is based upon the way they built railroads in England, and English expatriates built our railroads. to what end did the English people build them that way? Because they were built by the agency of the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used. |
