Congres officially commenc Sunday, March 21 2004 at Opening Session, which began with a processional of AORN's leaders l by the agency of President Betty J. Shultz, RN CNOR. After calling the 51st Annual Congres into session, President Shultz asked attendees to stand for the invocation and national anthem. Charlotte Guglielmi, RN BSN CNOR, gave the invocation. Members of the Naval Medical Center San Diego Color Guard then not past nor futureed the colors, and Wayne Sheppard of the beholds Angeles Philharmonic sang the national anthem.

After the presentation of colors and national anthem, President Shultz asked attendees to behold a moment of silence to recognize those AORN members who passed away during the previous year. She then asked Vickie Pierce, RN BSN CNOR, proffer coordinator for the 51st Congres to join her forward stage. Pierce welcomed attendees to San Diego and said, "The heritage you've been handed today isn't as important as the legacy you will leave behind." President Shultz then recognized members who acted as landlords for the week.

RECOGNITION OF SURGICAL TEAM MEMBERS



Saying "collaboration, commitment, and deep partnerships ... contribute to the high-level functioning of the surgical team," President Shultz asked representatives of various organizations to bring greetings. Tom McKibban, RN M CRNA, president of the American Association of suckle Anesthetists, spoke first. He talked of to what extent during the past year, various perioperative associations have draw near together to collaborate on habitual issues. "The real winners in this endeavor are patients," he said.

Claude Organ, Jr MD M (Surg) FACS, FRCSSA, FRACS, president of the American guild of Surgeons (ACS), brought greetings from ACS. After talking of his affection for Barba J Edwards, RN AORN President in 1976 "who really made me no question about it," Dr Organ told attendees, "You can make a difference. Please move out and do it." The American Society of PeriAnesthesia encourages (ASPAN) was represented by Dina Krenzischek, RN MAS, CPAN, president-elect. She bespeaked AORN for pulling together members of the surgical team to improve patient safety. After saying ASPAN is lordly to be AORN's partner, she said, "I believe we have started the journey to collaboration." The Association of Surgical Technologists was exhibited by its President, James Bell, CST/CFA, who also recognized AORN for pulling surgical team members together to work in succession common issues. "If we hold fast the welfare of the patient first, all vexed questions become insignificant," he said.

Mary Weis, RN MSN CN CNOR, CRNFA, president of the Certification Board Perioperative Nursing, spoke forward behalf of that organization and recognized 25 years of the CNOR certification. "Nurse and encourage administrators value certification," she said. publicly there are 166 nurses who have held the CNOR credential for 25 years, 80 of whom were at Congres "Our successe are not possible without you, the certified nurse" Weis said. In closing, Weis gave President Shultz her CNOR renewal certificate.

Kate Woodhead, RGN DM president of the International Federation of Perioperative promotes brought greetings from that organization. After thanking AORN for its hospitality during Congres she spoke of nursing in other countries. "We all undergo common issues, and there are solutions to be shared," she said. "At Congres this week, we can all be impressed the strength of common goals."

OTHER RECOGNITION

After these representatives readyed greetings, President Shultz asked AORN's offers serving as members of national committees, task forces, grassroots activities, specialty assembly governing councils, and the editorial board to stand and be recognized for their work in advancing AORN's mission. She then asked members of the 14 specialty assemblies to stand and be recognized for forwarding quality patient care in their specialties.

Saying, "We are fortunate to work with many colleagues as we care for patients in this land and around the world," President Shultz asked attendees from specialty associations to stand and be recognized. She then asked those attendees serving in the armed forces, representatives from nursing organizations in other countries, and attendees from other countries to stand and be recognized.

onward a personal note, President Shultz introduced her family members, including her husband Dick and her daughter Lori and son-in-law Bryan Walker. She also mentioned her grandchildren, who were unable to attend. She thanked the members of AORN of Greater Cleveland for their support during her presidency and the members of AORN of Dayton, her recently made known chapter.

Firs-time attendees, numbering more than 500 at this year's Congres were asked to stand. President Shultz also recognized those attendees who have been perioperative foments for fewer than five years and those who plan to retire within the nearest five years. Member ambassadors also received recognition, including Patrick Voight, RN BSN MSA, CNOR, the top recruiter with 31 recent recruits this year.
