Effective communication is critical to the plane functioning of a multidisciplinary surgical team. Of course, relationships among team members, particularly those between promotes and surgeons, have evolved in newly come decades as the nursing profession has revised its "handmaiden" image for that of an autonomous, ready health care profession. (4) The literature includes reports forward the motives behind this shift; (5) reflections upon its social, philosophical, and theoretical context; (6) and discussions of its influence forward physician-nurse relationships. (7) The expansion and nature of this influence forward specific activities, such as daily communicative exchanges, however, has not received attention from a discourse analytical view.

LITERATURE REVIEW

No studies were ground in the literature that directly address the part of communication in the interdisciplinary relationships of surgical team members in the OR. Studies of other clinical settings, however, report barriers to happy communication. (8) The lack of research specific to the OR has made it difficult to assess surgical team communication. Without research, it is difficult to assess the stretch and nature of recently identified evolutions in this area. Studying related and overlapping research domains, however, can reveal approaches to this novel area of investigation.

Research about health care professionals' relationships exhibit tos discord and disagreement among disciplinary disposes and much of the literature focuses onward the tension between physicians and succors (9) This literature, however, serves to be more political than scientific, and it put forwards broad characterization of issues rather than a systematic examination of activities.

Collaboration. Interdisciplinary collaboration has surfaced as a central issue in professionalism, (10) and it is encouraged, particularly by dint of nursing scholars. (11) The literature forward collaboration in the medical profession is wide-ranging. (12) small in number studies, however, have demonstrated an appreciable result effect due to lack of clear manners for defining, isolating, and analyzing the collaborative phenomenon. An important exception to this is novel research in critical care medicine. (13) In rare instances when a correlation has been established between collaboration, which is variously defined, (14) and clinical issues there is a lack of understanding about to what degree collaboration works in terms of communicative patterns and meanings (15) As one source proposes "we need more evidence and les rhetoric in order to understand when, for what reason and why collaboration works--or doesn't work--in particular settings." (16)

Organizational performance. Another related research domain is organizational performance. Research in this area has affected fields, similar as aviation, in which task analysis and social psychology have been combined to subject of attention team activity under pressure. (17) In medicine, often organizational performance research focuses forward the nature and explanation of human error. (18) Researchers have analyzed the performance of anesthesia care providers, (19) the coordination between anesthesiology and surgery staff members, (20) and the performance of the surgical team? In the latter application of mind surveys of 156 surgical team members representing surgery nursing, and anesthesiology revealed a perceived ne for better communication to increase efficiency and improve team morale. Observations of surgical performances revealed multiple errors related not to technical ability but to the interpersonal aspects of functioning in the OR.

PURPOSE

This article reports rises of an ongoing study that explores the nature of communication among team members from surgery nursing, and anesthesiology to identify used by all patterns, sites of tension, and rife strategies for resolution. Phase single data, reported here, come from ethnographic observations of team communication in the OR. Material from this close attention will be used to disclose appropriate staff member education programs about OR team communications.
