The top information technology priorities for health care providers include upgrading security forward technology systems to meet Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements, promoting patient safety, and reducing medical errors, according to a Jan 28 2002 freshs story from the Healthcare Information and Management methods Society (HIMSS). These and other findings are reported in the 13th Annual HIMSS Leadership Survey

Seventy-four percent of respondent cited clinical information regularitys as the most important application for health care organizations in the nearest two years. Fifty-eight percent said that enterprise resource planning applications would be important to their organization during the nearest few years.

Last year's other highest priority, deploying Internet technology, decreased eight points in this year's take a view of and the projected importance of Internet technology during the nearest two years decreased 14 points. Web applications were identified as important by dint of only 38% of respondents, down from 50% in 2001 Initiatives in health care look to be narrowing to deal with quality and costliness as indicated by the decreased priority placed forward Internet technology deployment, according to the release.
