In a long-term investigation diabetes mellitus was Linked to a 65% increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, according to a May 19 2004 recents release from the National Institutes of Health. The eventuates are among the first to examine in what manner certain cognitive systems may be affected selectively in tribe with diabetes.

The 824 consideration participants were followed for an average of 55 years and given detailed clinical evaluations annually, including neuropsychological testing of five cognitive theorys known to be affected by the agency of aging and Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. During the investigation period, 151 of the participants were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, including 31 who had diabetes.
